Get a quoteAccording to incident data from the FRNSW website, the first quarter of 2022 indicated that one in a hundred fire calls to FRNSW involved a battery in thermal runaway, which is when there is an uncontrolled and excessive rise in heat within a battery cell, often leading to cell venting and fire.
Get a quoteCall for a collaborative effort of researchers, OEMs, and policymakers. In post-crash situations, passengers, bystanders, and first responders are exposed to the immediate safety risks of stranded energy in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Stranded energy is the energy remaining inside any undamaged or damaged battery following an accident.
A further risk is that damaged cells in the battery can experience thermal runaway – uncontrolled increases in temperature and pressure – which can lead to battery reignition. The risks of electric shock and battery reignition/fire arise from the “stranded” energy that remains in a damaged battery.
Storing an electric vehicle with a damaged high-voltage lithium-ion battery is an additional problem.” The battery fires investigated by the NTSB reignited multiple times, even days after a crash, placing other vehicles and nearby structures at risk for fire. The Chevrolet Volt that reignited 3 weeks after a crash test damaged four nearby vehicles.
But the hazard concerns are not limited to just the rescue of the occupants because if the battery has been damaged, stranded energy within the vehicle's battery "may also lead to a fire - days, weeks or even months after the initial incident". But how often do these sorts of incidents occur?
Three of the lithium-ion batteries that ignited were damaged in high-speed, high-severity crashes, and the fourth lithium-ion battery fire occurred during normal vehicle operations. All three of the crash-damaged batteries reignited after firefighters extinguished the vehicle fires. The battery in the fourth investigation did not reignite.
As payback, however, there are certain restrictions. One reason for this practice is that too little research has been done into the behaviour of battery components under crash conditions, such as battery cells," explains Wolfgang Sinz from the Institute of Vehicle Safety at TU Graz.
