Get a quoteAs EVs get older, the batteries progressively degrade. It is expected that at around 75% of the battery’s original capacity, it has reached the end of its life in an EV. In reality what this means is that if the car was sold with 400 km driving range, at the end of its useful life it could be down to around 300 km.
Rapid charging is the quickest way to refill an EV battery, and the fastest public charge points can top them up to 80% in 30-40 minutes. EVs have sophisticated battery management systems to help calm the effects of rapid charging and protect the batteries from overcharging.
This is not a good way to predict the life expectancy of EV batteries, especially for people who own EVs for everyday commuting, according to the study published Dec. 9 in Nature Energy. While battery prices have plummeted about 90% over the past 15 years, batteries still account for almost a third of the price of a new EV.
Most EVs use lithium-ion batteries. These degrade over hundreds of charge/use cycles, becoming less effective in the process. However, drivers can expect upwards of 10 years or 100,000 miles of use – with reports of twice that distance – from an electric car. As such, the lifespan of an EV is not dissimilar to a conventional petrol or diesel model.
Table 8. Impact of recycling, changes in charging electricity mix, and lithium-ion battery (LIB) repurposing on the life cycle impacts of a battery electric vehicle. Red cells show increases in the environmental impacts, green cells show reductions greater than or equal to 20%, and yellow cells show reductions between 10% and 20%.
EV owners, the researchers note, who drive their vehicle in short bursts to and from work or around town, may go several days or even a week without recharging. The researchers attempted to represent that more realistic, periodic driving method in one of the driving profiles.
